The Legend of the Condor Heroes
The Legend of the Condor Heroes is a Hong Kong television series adapted from Louis Cha's novel of the same title. It was first broadcast on TVB Jade in Hong Kong in 1983. The 59 episodes long series is divided into three parts. This 1983 version is considered by many to be a classic television adaptation of the novel and features the breakthrough role of Barbara Yung, who played Huang Rong.

"YAU, is a patriotic Taoist priest. He becomes fugitive after assassinating a senior Kam mandarin. Tonight, he is again chased after by the Kam army. He breaks into the house of KWOK and YEUNG to hide away from the army. KWOK and YEUNG are two sworn brothers. They are living together and their wives are both pregnant. They help YAU to fight against the Kam army and they later become very good friends."

"The Kam Prince falls for the beauty of MRS. YEUNG at his first sight. He vows to have her as his wife, and he plots to do away with KWOK and YEING. KWOK is killed and his wife is lucky to have escaped to Mongolia, and there is the desert she gives birth to her son CHING. YEUNG is missing. MRS. YEUNG, not knowing the true identity of the KAM PRINCE, marries him out of gratitude. Before long, she also gives birth to a boy named HONG in the Kam Palace."

"Ten years later, CHING grows up to be an upright and proper man but still limited in kung-fu fighting. The Mongolian Princess WAH TSANG is very fond of him. One day, PRINCE SONG KWAN of Chun Lit Tribe and his son TO SI visit TIT while the KAM PRINCE arrives at Mongolia at the same time. TIT is busy receiving them. Annoyed by TO SI who falls for her beauty, Wah TSANG stays with CHING. Being called the Han bastard and defeated by the jealous T0 SI in wrestling, CHING feels ashamed. Resenting at not being installed as feudal lords, LIE MAN TRIBE declares war on the Kam kingdom. SONG KWAN sends two able-bodied soldiers to seek help from CHUN LIT TRIBE but they are killed on the way. Ordered by TIT who sees through the disunity of the LIE MAN soldiers, CHIT PIT and CHING kill the two Lie Man leaders. Losing a central figure, Lie Man is thus defeated. The injured CHING is warmly welcome by the Mongolians.\u2026 ..."

"On seeing the tablet of KWOK and YEUNG in his visit to CHING, the KAM PRINCE knows that CHING is KHOK's descendant. Fearing that MRS. KWOK's reunion with PAO whom he deeply loves will ruin their relation, the KAM PRINCE orders the FOUR DEMONS to burn CHING's camp. Chasing after CHING and his mother, the Demons are defeated by the SEVEN GROTESQUES. To avoid TIT\u2019s suspicion, the KAM PRINCE pretends to punish the Four Demons. He arouses ill-will between SONG KWAN and TIT to forestall TIT\u2019s growing threat to his kingdom. In the dinner which the KAM PRINCE hosts to apologize to CHING, TO SI jeers at CHING and forbids him to use the golden cup. TIT gives his helmet to CHING for containing wine, much to SONG KWAN's discontent. Failing to gain WAH TSANG's love, TO SI jeers at her and is hit hard by CHING who resents his behavior. To avoid disputing with SONG KWAN, TIT whips CHING and decides to marry WAH TSANG to TO SI.\u2026 ..."

"On their way back to Mainland, CHING and the SIX GROTESQUES clash with the disciples of the White Camel Clan. They become alert believing that the disciples must be plotting dark tricks in Mainland. The SIX GROTESQUES allow CHING to travel around on his own. CHING runs into WONG YUNG who, disguising as a beggar, makes fun of CHING. Led by YUNG to the casino, CHING meets the THREE YELLON DEMONS who wants to take him to the KAM PRINCE. CHING thus flees with YUNG. Fearing that YUNG will be involved, CHING pretends to be angry with her. Annoyed, YUNG assist the THREE DEMONS to trap CHING in the temple. After CHING apologizes to her, YUNG releases him and leave with him by boat. Finding that the head of the THREE DEMONS, SHA TUNG TIN, is after them, YUNG jumps into the water and defeats him. CHlNG's admiration for the beauty of MOK LIM CHE whom they come across in the tavern arouses YUNG's jealousy.\u2026 ..."

"Disliking YUNG's eccentricity and worrying that WONG and YUNG will bring trouble to CHING, YEUNG marries CHE to CHING who rejects due to his love for YUNG. When YUNG quarrels with CHE, CHING slaps YUNG who then furiously runs away. To avoid ruining the love between CHING and YUNG, CHE proposes to choose her husband by a fighting contest and loving HONG, she informs him about it. Caught by MUI CHIU FUNG to assist her in practising kung-fu, CHE is saved by YUNG. As HONG is late in sending prisoners to help MUI\u2019s practice, MUI finds her feet paralyzed and thus she needs to take a rest. HONG's frivolous manner during the fighting contest annoys YEUNG who forbids CHE to marry him. Add to CHE's sorrow, she finds that in fact HONG has no intention to marry her."

"Resenting HONG's savageness who clashes with YEUNG, CHING assists YEUNG but is defeated. lntervened by WONG CHU YAT, Elder CHUNG YEUNG's fifth disciple and HONG's uncle, HONG runs away. Knowing that HONG has connection with the notorious AU YEUNG HAK, Priest YAU rebukes HONG who then promises to break the relation but in fact he still keeps in touch with him secretly. The KAM PRJNCE and HONG host a feast for all skilful martial men. The drunken KAM PRINCE is jealous when seeing PAO fondly holding YEUNE\u2019s belongings. Still devoted to YEUNG, PAO is unwilling to accept the prince's love. CHING secretly brings CHE's letter to HONG asking him to meet her at the temple. CHING unintentionally discloses the matter to YEUNG who furiously goes to fight with HONG. Due to HONG's limited potency, YEUNG is not killed though struck by his WHITE BONE CLAW to learns from MUl CHIU FUNG.\u2026 ..."

"Seeing that the tavern\u2019s where YEUNG lives is wrecked and people are killed, PAO falls ill. HONG rebukes the KAM PRINCE telling him that he has been to the Ngaus Village to investigate his background. Unmoved by the KAM PRINCE's offer of fame and fortune, HONG is then locked up. THE KAM PRINCE cheats the KAM EMPEROR who asks to see HONG. Suspected, HUNG HEI looks for HONG and discovers him. Remembering being insulted when once disguised as a beggar, HONG hides the truth in order to maintain his high status. HONG replaces PAO's letter to YEUNG and tells YEUNG cannot go back to him, much to YEUNG's anger. HONG lies to PAO that YEUNG is dead. In deep sorrow and taken in by HONG's hypocrisy, PAO continues to stay at the prince's house. Knowing that YUNG is WONG\u2019s daughter, the SIX GROTESQUES forbid CHING to get along with her and hints to YEUNG that he should marry CHE to CHING. Indignant, YUNG fights with the GROTESQUES."

"Blaming the GROTESQUES for interfering her relation with CHING, YUNG draws them to the cave where the GROTESQUES are attacked by MUI CHIU FUNG. Disappointed at YUNG's narrow-mindedness, CHING assists the GROTESQUES. YUNG then convinces MUI to stop fighting for fear that CHING will be injured. CHE sneaks into the Prince\u2019s house and rebukes PAO for her heartlessness. The innocent PAO thus knows that HONG has replaced her letter so she flees with CHE to meet YEUNG. Discovered by the guards, PAO is forced to stay behind. On her way back, CHE meets HONG who lies that he pretends to yield to the KAM PRINCE while finding chances to kill him. Taken in by HONG, CHE agrees to hide PAO's situation from YEUNG. With CHAN's death still in mind, MUI attacks CHING on seeing the dagger he holds that killed CHAN."

"To protect CHING, YUNG is injured by MUI CHIU FUNG. Grateful for YUNG's assistance at the Peach Blossom Is1and in the past, MUI releases the two. CHING is deeply touched by YUNG's love for him. YEUNG drowns his sorrow by drinking and CHE thus tells him about HONG replacing-the letter. Thinking that it is dangerous for YEUNG to see PAO, CHE discusses with CHING and YUNG on how to rescue PAO. Searching around the prince's house, CHE runs into HONG who has deploy the guards in anticipation of attack. Taken in by HONG's honeyed words, CHE drinks with HONG and gets drunk. After waiting for CHE for a long time, CHING and YUNG attack the guards while YEUNG looks for PAO. YEUNG and PAO weep on meeting each other. While they are talking about bringing HONG with them, HONG suddenly appears."

"YUNG arranges YEUNG and PAO who are released by HONG to live in seclusion on the hill. The KAM PRINCE misses PAO very much. To take revenge for KWOK, Priest YAU catches TUEN TIN TAK and brings him to the Ngaus Village. CHING and YUNG save TUEN misunderstanding that, he is bullied by YAU. Later, Ching knows that TUEN has in fact killed his father and so the three take TUEN to YEUNG. TO divert their attention, TUEN discloses that the murder is directed by the KAM PRINCE. Overcome by sorrow, PAO intends to kill herself while TUEN takes the chance to slip away. Blamed by Priest YAU, PAO does not eat or drink, much to YEUNG's worry. To kill the KAM PRINCE, YUNG suggests to use the Heaven Bomb. Advised by YUNG, CHE tries to draw HONG away from the scene but fails. HONG stands in the way when YUNG is about to throw the bomb. Discovered, YEUNG and the others escape after fierce fighting.\u2026 ..."

"Priest YAU sees that HONG has turned to the Kam kingdom, captures him and decides to take him to YEUNG. As expected by YAU and WONG, HONG still bears his high status in mind and.so makes use of CHE to help him escape. YAU chases to kill HONG; CHE risks her live to save him and is injured but YAU still does not give up. YEUNG and CHING come to the scene to stop YAU. YEUNG then pretends to turn on a new leaf and in the end he is excused. YEUNG and HONG go to Ngaus Village to look for PAO while CHING and YUNG return to Peach Blossom Island. On the way, CHING and YUNG meet MUI CHIU FUNG who is tracing the marks of WHITE BONE CLAW along the way. YUNG then realizes that HONG has left signs for the Kam soldiers to follow. YUNG and CHING thus go back to help YEUNG. YEUNG and HONG, take a rest at the nunnery and are shocked to discover that PAO is about to become a nun.\u2026 ..."

"HUNG is very upset in learning of the internal strife between the two factions: the 'Dirty Clothes' and 'Clean Clothes' in the Beggar's Clan. In order to investigate who are the black sheep, he sends CHAU to go undercover in the Clan.\n\nMeanwhile, he requests YUNG to succeed him as the leader, and asks her to go to Ngok Chau to host for him the Annual Beggar's Meet. YUNG and CHING set off immediately."

"HONG has always been covetous in being the leader of the Beggar's Clan. He gangs up with PANG, one of the four elders in the Clan, and disguises himself as a beggar to attend the Meet. When YUNG is about to take over the post, he suddenly appears with HUNG's 'Beat Dog Cudgel', which he has picked up incidentally, and claims that he is the actual successor chosen by HUNG. Furthermore, he accuses WONG to have killed HUNG in order to stir up troubles among the masses."
